Among the years of my experience as webmaster and internet marketeer, the following directories are the most popular ones among webmasters and some these directories have already established themselves and has been out there right from the inception of the Web. Alive & Aviva are the most recently popular directories in the WWW.
1. Yahoo Directory (Paid) – http://www.dir.yahoo.com
2. DMOZ Open Directory Project – http://www.dmoz.org
3. Business.com (Paid) – http://www.business.com
4. BOTW Best of the Web (Paid) – http://www.botw.org
5. Uncover The Net (Paid) – http://www.uncoverthenet.com
6. JoeAnt (Free/Paid) – http://www.joeant.com
7. Link Centre (paid) – http://www.linkcentre.com
8. Alive Directory (paid) – http://www.alivedirectory.com
9. Aviva Directory (paid) – http://www.avivadirectory.com
10. V7N directory (paid) – http://directory.v7n.com
Although most directories dont accept free submissions (except DMOZ) it is recommended to list your site in all the above popular directories.

JoeAnt.com is free when you become an editor. Just sign up and submit your site(s). Nothing more is required, and after approval of your submission(s) nobody asks to stay.

At no 10. I think Romow/Directorydump/GII/ewebpages.or/2yi.net/Linksjuice are good ones.

Really a very comprehensive list of directories, I thought that Bigweblinks would have made to the top.

I don’t think you should leave out Starting Point and Search Monster.org. Starting Point is a little expensive but Search Monster is an absolute steal. Google loves Search Monster, it ranks very well.

Rob, i am aware of starting pointt and searchmonster both are indeed good, but still i am not convinced that they make to top 10. I submitted my site to startingpoint though they have annual fee, to my dismay, they rejected my site because my alexa is more than 50,000.

Top 10 is too hard to determine especially without a benchmark, what are we measuring on? Lots of great directories out there!
