i really hate antivirus softwares slowing down the PC. i have 2GB of RAM with core2duo processor and inspite of that, antivirus softwares make my PC bogged down. With over 300GB of data to scan, it takes forever for antivirus softwares to scan the PC.
Here are the results of various antivirus softwares which i have purchased and used in my PC.
AVG Antivirus (Free) – Slowdown
Norton Antivirus (Paid) – Slowdown
Kaspersky Antivirus (Paid) – Fast
Avast Antivirus (Free) – Fast
Clearly, my favorites are Kaspersky and Avast Antivirus which i believe are ones you should go for, if you dont want PC getting slowed down.
Finally, to get the best protection against viruses and internet attacks, make sure you buy the antivirus software that comes with firewall like Kaspersky Internet Security. Just my 2cent advice.

My favorite paid are Eset Smart security, and the Norton 2010. For free, Comodo’s personal security is looking really nice. Make sure to disable scanning registry keys as it can cause a nasty CPU eating condition on some computers.

I always prefer to use Kasperky over Avast or McAfee. Kaspersky is much better in detecting new viruses and it does not consume too much resources on your dektop PC.`*;
