Cool Macbook keyboard shortcuts to First time users

I have been a windows user for so many years and never seem or worked with a mac. Recently i got a macbook and the transformation from windows to OSX hasnt been easy for me to work with and i struggled a lot to get used to the keys.

If you have been a windows user and using your mac for the first time, the following tips may prove really helpful.

Text Editing

How to use as DELETE key?

DELETE = Erase by 1 char (right to left. Works similar to BACKSPACE in windows)

Using as BACKSPACE Key?

Fn + DELETE = Delete by 1 char (left to right. Works similar to DELETE in windows)

Note: There is no BACKSPACE key in macbook. DELETE works just like backspace.

Where is HOME and END keys?

Command + left arrow = Cursor to first char of line


Command + right arrow = Cursor END of line.

Command + up arrow = Go to first page (like HOME key in windows)
Command + down arrow = Go to last page (like ENDĀ  key in windows)

Files & Shortcuts

Command + Shift + 3 = Screenshot of screen
Command + Shift + 4 = Screenshot of selection

How to delete a file?

Command + Delete = Delete a file and move to trash

How to rename a file?

Enter = To rename a file

Just remember Command key is equivalent of CTRL key in windows.


How to close window?

Command + W = To close window

How to save file using a keyboard shortcut?

Command + S = To save file

How to quickly minimize a window?

Press Option/ALT to send window to HIDE

For this to work you have to first change the settings at Expose. Go to Top left of screen Apple >System Preferences > Expose and set whatever key you want. It can be also SHIFT.

Right Option = To hide a single window to a side ()

MOUSE

  • Place 2 fingers and slide up and down to scroll page
  • Tap to do a single click.
  • Do a singleĀ  1,2 tap with your 2 fingers to perform a right click.
