Recently brought home a blackberry storm and as much i love the phone, i was very disappointed with the low battery life with the phone. It would only last about 1-2 days before it gets fully drained and i am forced to plug into charger every now and then. I have used nokia business phone for years and i only charged about once in 2 weeks or so and never had this type of situation.

The following are some of the useful power saving tips which just might help you to conserve power:

* Turn off the phone when you sleep. Use the auto off feature. It will save power.

* Charge your phone in AC power for atleast 20 to 24 hrs.

* Disable GPS if you don’t use it. This drains lot of power.

* Turn off Bluetooth when not in use.

* If you live in a country where 3G is not supported then set the mobile network to 2G.

* Remove any unwanted applications running in your blackberry phone. You also might want to exit the applications running in the background.

* Set the background light to 50% or less and set automatically dim to ON.

* Dont set vibrator and ring tone ON at the same time. Use only one instead.

Lastly don’t forget to restart the phone. If nothing works, then you might want to consider buying a new extended life battery for your blackberry phone.

Useful Typing Tips in Blackberry Storm

I love blackberry storm and recently i was having so much fun in touch screen typing the best part i like is typing especially using the SureType keyboard. From being a noob i learnt a lot of handy tips for typing in blackberry storm

In storm there are 3 types of keyboards.

1. SureType (portrait)
2. Multitap (portrait)
3. Full Keyboard (landscape)

I very much like typing in portrait mode, unlike in landscape where the tapping touch screen was hard in the corners with full keyboard. So, i handle pretty much everything in the portrait view. By default storm shows full keyboard in landscape view and suretype/multitap in portrait view.

Here are some of the useful tips you might want to know…

1. When you type in email address, just press SPACE to get @ symbol or SPACE to get a DOT.

2. To type all letters in caps, press and hold the SHIFT key (shown as ‘aA’) for 1 or 2 seconds and you will a padlock, which means all the letters you type will be in caps.

3. To type numbers continuously, press and hold !?123 and soon it will be locked and then you can continuously type numbers or symbols.

4. You might want to get a DOT or full stop quickly when completing a sentence. To get this, press SPACE twice.

5. To type passwords or new words, use the Multitap Keyboard. To enable it, press main menu button select enable multitap.

6. When are you are typing a word in portrait mode using suretype and the predicted word shown on dropdown box just highlight it (dont tap the touch screen) and then ENTER key. In this way it would be easy for you to type fast.

7. To send/save something, say email or phone settings, just press main menu (it auto selects send or save) and again press main menu.

8. The very interesting part using suretype (in portrait view) is its ability to learn new unknown words. You need not switch to multitap.

For example to type `DIWALI`

Type `Di`
Type w, on dropdown just highlight `Diw`
Type a, on dropdrown highlight `Diwa`
Type l, on dropdown highlight `Diwal`
Type i, select `Diwali` and press ENTER

Thats it! Once the new word is learnt,

9. To type copyright © or trademark ® or language symbols

© -> Just place your finger (dont press) `C` key for 2 secs, you will see new button for ©

® -> Just place your finger and highlight R key for 2 seconds, you will see a new button appear on the screen. Tap it.

10. To make corrections or edit a word, place your finger on top of word and tap it, you will see a blue rectangular box, drag it to specific character and press BACKARROW key to delete characters or you can type continuously and you will get new word suggestions.

11. To make keyboard disappear or hide it, just slide your finger from top to bottom of keyboard to make it hide.

12. To quick insert your phone number or PIN while texting or emailing just type

`mynumber`
`mypin`

the phone will automatically insert your phone number and blackberry PIN to send to your friends.

Enjoy and have fun with your blackberry phone!

Blackberry Storm

In terms of display both touch screens show a high resolution images. I would definitely recommend blackberry if you are a business user or a person who likes to text a lot. For absolute fun iphone is the best!

Dont forget that blackberry storm is as good as iphone and much cheaper!

With that being said, none of the google applications (gmail, google maps) refused to work as well. I frequently got “APN settings not specified” or “Tunnel failed” and the applications just hung up.

Solution

If you see no option for email setup, dont panic, just ask your mobile service provider to activate the blackberry internet and email service. I did contact vodafone by phone and within 20min or so every thing worked perfectly in my blackberry. Even third party applications worked like a charm. I guess every telecom mobile service provider must have some kind of activation for blackberry to work properly.

I have always been fond of finding a suitable mobile phone for senior citizens with poor eyesight. Many aged persons lose the interest for mobile phones just because they are not comfortable to operate the mobile phone without wearing eye-glasses.

Dont forget that senior citizens also form a good consumer market. I am very disappointed that many mobile phone companies dont focus on senior citizens comfort while making a mobile phone.

Here are some the good mobile phone that are suitable for senior citizens or people having poor eye sight. The most important characteristic of a mobile phone for aged elder people is displaying the characters/fonts bigger in the display screen. It just doesnt matter either it is single or color display.

1. MotoFone F3

This phone is a very cheap $45 phone having a paper like electronic display. It shows big characters.

A good photo gallery about this phone can be found here

2. Samsung Phone

Almost all samsung phones are bit suitable for senior citizens because they have the option of changing text size.

I particulary very impressed with samsung x520phone very much suited for poor eye sighted people. It is foldable types comes with wine red color. An excellent review about this phone can be found here.

Besides this i managed to collect photographs from my digicamera just to show how comfortable it can be with available font sizes.

3. EmporiaLife Handset
An exclusive mobile phone built for senior citizens made by austrian company. This phone is still not available and only in production stage. You can visit the company website: www.emporia.at

I am truly Nokia fan. I bought my favorite nokia business phone Nokia E50 but dont know how to type. I am really good at typing in PC but when it comes to typing fast in mobile phone for SMS and other applications i am really poor. Are you like me? Just bought the mobile phone and dont know how to type fast.

I am sure that many people are there like me who just dont know how to type fast in your mobile phone. I searched the whole web until i learnt somehow this typing trick. With this tutorial i am going to show you some good tricks to type fast in your nokia mobile phone.

There are two traditional ways of typing in your mobile phone.

1. Tapping
2. Predictive Text (using predictive guessing from dictionary)

Tapping

You already might know that each key in your with a number (for ex. 1 (abc). By tapping continously you get the corresponding alphabets in the key. For example.. you tap 1 once, you get ‘a’, tap twice you get ‘b’, tap 3 times to get ‘c’, so goes other keys in the mobile.

Just to type “Hello”, imagine how many times you need to tap the phone buttons. This method is ok for typing one or two words. As a beginner you might like this method, but there is no way you can type a message or text with more than 20 words or a short paragraph with this technique. It takes so much time and not really a good idea. That is why you need to switch on predictive text in your mobile phone.

Predictive Text

This method though might look cumbersome at the start is the easiest once you have mastered a few tricks. Using this method you can type the text without looking at the mobile phone screen and most times you can achieve 20 words per minute. Just switch on predictive text in your mobile phone.

Now look at the benefits..

To type “Welcome” just press 9352663, you will see the typed text. You also might see it underlined. See you have achieved this word just by tapping 7 keys. Whereas if you use tapping method it could have gone more than 15 strokes. See the advantage!.

Tips

1. If underlined it means prediction is going on. Just keep typing continuously. Although the word might look wrong, once you complete the typing it will be correct one! Should look like a little magic.

2.. If you see “?” at the end of the word, it means the word you want cannot be guessed correctly. This could be the word (like place name or object name or local language) not built into dictionary. Just press spell and manually enter the text. Once it is done it is auto included in the dictionary. Next time you write it will be automatically inserted.

3. If you want numbers (1,2,3…) hold the corresponding key for 1-2 seconds for the number to appear.

4. Press * to rotate the predictive word. For example by typing 66 you might get “on” or “no”. Pressing * will rotate the word predicted.

5. For smileys press 1 while the word is underlined. You will get more smiley characters by continuously tapping 1 key.

You can visit T9.com to practice few strokes.
