Traveling abroad for business, tourism or honeymoon is often lots of fun and a great experience for many indians. Sometimes it can be a nightmare, if your bags are stolen and with that your passport is gone.
Indians have to be careful when traveling in Europe, in countries such as Spain, Italy etc. and keep an eye out for pick pockets and tourist scams.
If you lose your indian passport abroad in a foreign country, you are stuck there without your identification documents leading to lots of hassles, expenses, sleepless nights. Dont panic! Here is what you need to do. The procedure is the same if your passport is stolen.
1. Go to nearest police station
Go to the nearest police station where you are, file a police report (tell them where you lost your passport), they will give you a copy of police report in about 30 minutes. Dont be afraid to go to the police station. Police report is one of most important documents you must have in hand proving your the loss/theft of your passport along with other valuables.
2. Call the Indian embassy
Call the indian embassy at the emergency lines and let them know your about your passport loss, They are there to help you. Here is a complete list or google the embassy website.

3. Apply for duplicate passport
The indian embassy/consulate will help you apply for duplicate passport, most likely you will need to apply in person. It should take about 7 days minimum to get your passport (sometimes more depends on the embassy), as the passports are printed in India and had to come back. Hand written passports are phased outs. Prepare your hotel bookings accordingly.
- Passport application form duly filled in online (online not the downloadable one) at http://passport.gov.in/nri/OnlineRegistration.jsp?pocode=ESPM then saved, printed and completed in all respects, duly signed including affixing of photo as per specifications given in the link Guidelines for photographs and Sample Photographs,
- Copy of Police Report regarding loss of passport
- Copy of Lost Passport (front & back pages)
- Copy of Visa & Air tickets
- Personal application citing reasons for immediate issue of Duplicate Passport
- Pay the passport fee
- Collect the passport at the embassy.
4. Get your lost visas back
If you have had any previous visas also lost with the passport, then you can get them back by contacting the respective embassy of the foreign country that issued your visa. For example, if you have had french visa, call the french consulate where you are and notify them. It will take a couple of days for them to issue you
They will probably require your scans of old visa, new passport and police report. They cannot affix visa without your new indian passport. If you hold a residence permit, they will give you a statement which many airlines accept allowing your onward journey.
5. Claim your insurance
If you have travel insurance cover, you will be covered for loss of passport. Contact the insurance company
Loss of Passport Claim Procedure
The list of documents required to be attached with the claim are as follows:
- Duly Signed Claim Form stating exact circumstances of loss
- Copy of FIR (first information report)/Police Report.
- Receipts related to expenses incurred to obtain a new passport
- NEFT form and Pre Printed Cancelled cheque stating insured’s / Claimant Indian Bank account details
- Passport and visa copy with Entry Stamp Overseas and exit Stamp from India if applicable
It is generally a good idea to keep scans of your passport, visas in your email or dropbox before you travel abroad. Providing copies of these will help to speed up the processing time for duplicate passport.

| In case your passport has not been damaged beyond recognition, i.e. passport number is legible, name is legible and photo is intact, then you can apply for re-issue of passport under the Tatkaal scheme. But, if passport has been damaged beyond recognition, then you cannot apply under the Tatkaal scheme.
