i have recently had DSL line frequently down and with every 10-15 minutes the internet disconnects i have noticed the SNR margin (signal to noise ratio margin) value go down below 10.0  and often in negative ones which could mean that your DSL is unstable and your internet could possibly disconnect frequently. Any value around 30 db is really good and your DSL should be steady without intermittently going down.

Be aware the SNR margin must be always around 30db and Line Attenuation should have no more than 40db (means too much noise in the line) and these two values greatly contribute to the speed in your internet connection. Your modem should be able to show these values under DSL status. You can type http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.168.1/ to access your modem/router settings.

SNR Values

  1. Less than 8db or negative —> Poor DSL line causing to frequently disconnections
  2. 10db to 20db —> DSL may be unstable at times
  3. 20db or more —-> Good and stable line
  4. 30db+ —> Excellent DSL line

Dont forget to observe SNRvalue if you face unstable DSL with lights blinking and not steady.

To fix problems DSL like this, always make  sure that your

  • ADSL splitter is in good condition, assuming that your splitter must be the first device ( to split your VOICE  and DATA line) . The VOICE should lead to phone and DATA line should go to modem.
  • Check for any noise in your telephone line.
  • Remove all or any wireless equipments near your modem, which could possibly attenuate the DSL line.
